The Great Lakes Maritime Database is a tremendous source of information on approximately 14,000 19th Century ships that sailed the Great Lakes. Each vessel record may include build & owner info, a brief historical timeline, and photographs. Using the custom Ships templates in VITA, the Alpena Public Library in Michigan worked closely with the the OurDigitalWorld team to rescue and migrate the records from a defunct database for enhanced and ongoing discovery in a database that grows daily.
